PIGEON BAY ROAD - LINO PRINT 2025

Evocative portrayal of dog-walker enjoying the shade and solitude of the countryside.

MIDDLE ROAD 40/40 - LINO PRINT 2025
Edition of 25

Downhill view of a steep, forested, section of Middle Road in Pigeon Bay. I was struck by the symmetry of the two  NZLTA speed signs - in complete contrast to the chaos of the surrounding bush.

Paper size: 297mm x 420mm (A3)
Paper: Fabriano Rosaspina 220gsm

DRYSTONE WALL - LINO PRINT 2025

Contrasting and combining man-made structures and vegetation. Sheds, water tanks, and stone-masonry.
Fascinating shapes and shadows.

PIGEON BAY SWING - LINO PRINT 2025
Edition of 25

A popular improvised swing hanging from one of the giant macrocarpa trees that overhang Pigeon Bay’s pebble beach. Of uncertain origin, this swing has provided fun for generations of youngsters at low tide, and bigger thrills when the tide is in and swingers risk a drenching.

SHED IN WINTER -
LINO PRINT
2025
Edition of 25

The history of the “Kukupa” shed may be linked to the saw-milling industries that flourished here in the mid to late 19th century, or the subsequent livestock farming. I’m not sure, but it’s an intriguing local landmark, sufficiently so to have inspired this artwork.

PIGEON BAY BOAT CLUB - LINO PRINT 2025
Edition of 20

As viewed from the Pigeon Bay Wharf.

There has been a wharf here since the 1850’s. It was heavily used for the transportation of timber in the days before a roading network was in place.

KUKUPA - LINO PRINT 2025
Edition of 25

Kūkupa (also known as Kererū or New Zealand wood pigeon) is linked to the history of Whakaroa (Pigeon Bay). At the time of European settlement these native birds were so abundant that their presence inspired the name of the bay itself, and that of a locality within the bay where a school was established - Kukupa.

I photographed this bird on my way to the letterboxes one day. It had “composed” itself nicely amongst the sycamores. Unfortunately, sycamores pose a major threat to our ecosystems here in New Zealand because they grow rapidly and choke out native species.

BRIDGE A77 - LINO PRINT 2025
Edition of 25

A study of sunlight and long winter shadows on the road surface.
I’ve shown the print mounted here with a matt to demonstrate how effective prints can be when framed this way.

An unremarkable road bridge in Pigeon Bay that spans one of the many streams that criss-cross the valleys here. This one bears a small metal badge saying “A77”. I’ve no idea what this means.

KUKUPARCELS
LINOCUT PRINT
2025
Edition of 25

Clusters of rural letterboxes like those depicted here are something of a New Zealand icon. I’m glad I caught this moment because this scene has since changed and a new, more organised structure is now in place!
